The process for workers' compensation claims

Employees expect to be safe when they go to work each day, unless they work at an inherently dangerous job as a firefighter, police officer, miner or construction worker. Employees shouldn't have to worry about whether they might get injured when at work or if they will get to leave in one piece at the end of the day. That's why workers' compensation is so important.

If you suffer an injury on the job it's important for you to seek medical evaluation immediately. This is an important part of the workers' compensation process. You should see a doctor even if you think that the injury is not severe. It's better to be safe than sorry.

At the same time, if possible, you should inform your employer of the injury. If the injury is too severe, be sure to get to a hospital first and then tell your employer. Delaying medical attention can lead to your condition worsening.

When informing your employer be sure to provide the date, time, and location where the accident occurred. Have anyone who witnessed the injury provide their account in writing to your employer as well.

Usually, the employer should file the workers' compensation claim with their insurance company on your behalf. If the employer fails to file the claim, or refuses to do so, they are breaking the law. It's best to have a workers' compensation attorney in your corner should you ever suffer an injury on the job.

If you've suffered an injury on the job it's in your best interest to protect your rights as soon as possible. You should file a workers' compensation claim yourself or promptly contact an attorney that specializes in this area of the law.
